Calssfication of Piston Ring
- Gas ring: also known as compression ring, used for sealing between the piston and the cylinder to prevent high-temperature and high-pressure gas in the cylinder from entering the crankcase. Common gas ring cross-section shapes include rectangular ring, barrel ring, conical ring, twisted ring, trapezoidal ring, etc.
- Oil ring: also known as engine oil ring, divided into ordinary oil ring and combined oil ring. When the piston moves upward, the lubricating oil splashed on the cylinder wall is evenly distributed. When the piston moves downward, the excess lubricating oil on the cylinder wall is scraped off to prevent the lubricating oil from entering the combustion chamber for combustion.

Function of piston ring
- Sealing function: ensure the seal between the piston and the cylinder, control air leakage to a minimum, and improve the thermal efficiency of the engine.
- Oil control function: the oil ring scrapes the excess lubricating oil on the cylinder wall when the piston moves downward, and evenly distributes the lubricating oil when the piston moves upward, preventing the lubricating oil from entering the combustion chamber for combustion, and ensuring smooth lubrication between the piston and the components.
- Heat conduction function: the piston ring conducts the heat of the piston to the cylinder liner, which plays a role in cooling the piston and the cylinder liner and reducing the temperature and pressure inside the engine.
- Guiding function: the piston ring keeps the piston in the cylinder, preventing the piston from directly contacting the cylinder wall, ensuring smooth movement of the piston, reducing friction resistance, and preventing the piston from knocking the cylinder.
Materials and surface treatment

- Materials of piston ring:
Commonly used piston ring materials include high-quality gray cast iron, alloy cast iron, alloy ductile iron, etc., and there are also steel piston rings. Among them, cast iron piston rings have good wear resistance and thermal stability, and are cheap; steel piston rings have high hardness, good wear resistance, and strong thermal stability.

In order to improve the performance of piston rings, surface treatment technologies such as thermal spraying, electroplating, chrome plating, gas nitriding, physical deposition, surface coating, zinc-manganese phosphating treatment, etc. are often used.
