Marine Diesel Engine

Marine diesel engines, with their high thermal efficiency, excellent economy, easy starting, and wide adaptability to various types of vessels, quickly became adopted as a propulsion system for ships. By the 1950s, diesel engines had almost completely replaced steam engines in newly built ships. Marine diesel engines have become the primary propulsion system for civilian ships, small and medium-sized vessels, and conventional submarines. Marine diesel engines are categorized by their function within the vessel as main engines and auxiliary engines. The main engines serve as propulsion, while the auxiliary engines drive generators, air compressors, water pumps, and other equipment.

Marine diesel engines are generally classified as high-speed, medium-speed, and low-speed diesel engines.
